Flowering Cherry

This group of trees is native to the northern temperate regions of the world. It includes the taller American Black Cherry, and many other species and horticultural varieties. The profusely flowering varieties from eastern Asia typically flower in the early spring before new leaves develop. Those from North America and Europe bloom a little later, producing flowers and leaves at about the same time. Landscapers primarily use these trees for their floral value. The Japanese Cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, DC are probably the best known example of this in the U.S.
